Let Farms
At Douglas there are still eleven families farming estate farms - many of whom have been associated with those farms for several generations.
Despite going through a difficult period of time for British agriculture the Family has taken the long-view and invested significantly in the estate farms in recent years in order to ensure they remain viable and, as importantly, to preserve the fabric of the local farming community for the future.
Whilst the farming arrangements between the Estate and its Farmers are, structure wise, one of Landlord and Tenant, the Family have always treated those relationships as being more of a “loose partnership” working together for both parties benefit - in the hopes that both can flourish.
As a result relationships between the Estates and their Tenants are generally positive - rather than being confrontational.
Farms, when they do become vacant, tend either to be taken in-hand (and farmed by the Estate) or re-let to existing farming Tenants in order to ensure their viability for the future - livestock farming, is a long-term business.
However, there are often opportunities to take short-term grazing lets or rent surplus farm buildings - for further details please see Current Properties Available to Let.
