Gateside - Douglas Estate
Gateside is a proposed new development on the western side of the village of Douglas.
Phase one of the development was allocated in the South Lanarkshire Local Plan in 2008, and was also submitted by the Estate as a possible project under the Scottish Government Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative.
The bid, submitted by Ristol on the Estate’s behalf, whilst praised, was unsuccessful, because of the Government’s decision to focus on eleven strategic sites (1,000 plus houses) rather than smaller projects like Gateside.
The Master Plan for the site, which takes inspiration from the themes used at Poundbury, is for 44 new homes (including the conversion of an existing farm building) set around a series of parking courts and public amenity space, has been prepared. The style and density of the development will mimick the venacular of the heart of the conservation area of the village. An Outline Planning Application submitted in March 2011 - Phase 1
The development will embrace sustainable building techniques and green technologies – the intention being to create a contemporary exemplar project comprising principally of "open market" affordable housing.
